Fire Purification Ritual
Today we joined the Shinto fire purification ritual of Ohitaki at Myokoji Temple in Takahama.
Ohitaki is a beautiful ritual held during autumn and winter, symbolizing purification, renewal, and gratitude as the seasons shift. At its heart is a large bonfire where talismans, written wishes, and sacred items from the past year are burned, their smoke carrying prayers to the heavens and returning them to the gods with reverence.
More than just a fire, Ohitaki brings people together to reflect on blessings, offer prayers for health and prosperity, and share the warmth of community. It’s a comforting tradition that unites participants in hope and gratitude, lighting the way for a brighter, more abundant season ahead.
